First Visit to the A5 Pass - Pen yr Ole Wen

30th August 2009

A days holiday today took me to a new location within LFA7 - The A5 Pass. Located inbetween Bethesda and Capel Curig at the head of Llyn Ogwen this location is one of the classic low flying routes and is frequently used by Hawks returning to nearby RAF Valley.

Today was Valley photocall/families day so Pete and I decided to try our luck and see if we could catch something unusual heading to Valley.

The climb up is the hardest I've completed in photographing military aircraft in the UK low flying system, it is certainly not a place to head to alone on a first visit, or in poor weather.

Pass of the day went to the Tucano who approached as if he would fly over Llyn Ogwen only to pull left and go behind Tryfan and then descend, inverted, down to the valley.

The alternative route through the A5 pass!.
